Next Generation TOEFL
Many colleges and Universities in native English speaking countries use TOEFL scores to determine the admission of a non native English speaker to take up one of their courses or programs. TOEFL started its venture in 1964, when Educational Testing Service (ETS) administered the test for the first time in USA. Today it has turned out to be one of the most prestigious exams for English language. Approximately more than 25 million students take up TOEFL test in a year. Initially it was offered in paper based format but digital age transformed it from a paper based format to computer based one. Then by 2005 there was a revolutionary progress in the test format. This revolution arose with the arrival of internet and it was named internet based TOEFL or next generation TOEFL.
One special feature of internet based TOEFL is, this is the Phase where test taking became easier. In old format people have to go through the questions and answers many times in certain sections like listening and speaking. But internet made it easier to answer the questions in listening section because it helped the test takers to get away from this practice of checking the questions while listening to audio. It also paved way to add some innovative and useful tasks like framing a new sentence and placing it in a suitable place of a passage. During scenarios like this test takers will start using a variety of vocabulary and their grammar usage will be up to an academic standard. This means that by the time a person takes up an internet based TOEFL test their language and their ability to locate ideas and facts in a passage would have widened in a quick pace. As a result the standard of preparation materials also increased with the arrival of internet. It is a must to update oneself with tips and techniques on how to score in new generation TOEFL.
Next generation TOEFL is integrated of four sections namely reading, listening, speaking and writing. The scoring scales also differs in internet based TOEFL. In a computer based TOEFL the test taker should score 300 while internet based TOEFL is designed on the score scales of 120, in which each section is scaled from the scores ranging from 0 to 30.
The highlight of these new scoring scales is that it includes grammar as a major role in all the sections of internet based TOEFL. Grammar is considered much higher even in writing and speaking section. On the whole it has become a challenging task to prepare for each and every section in TOEFL but effective results are achieved in internet based TOEFL tests. Technical improvement plays a major role because there are standard preparation materials which are available even online. It is said that the minimum preparation time for TOEFL is three to four months.
During the time when candidates prepare for the test, they find it easier because, they do not have to travel for miles to find the material for preparation, as online brings all the commodities to one’s doorsteps. Time management also becomes easier with internet.
