Degree Structure

Since the 2007 academic year, Swedish higher education institutions have switched to a new degree structure following the Bologna Process. The graduate study level is termed as second cycle and offers two degree options: two-year master’s degree and one-year master’s degree. Two-year master’s degree (masterexamen) is achievable after successful completion of four semesters of classroom lectures and research projects, and accumulation of 120 ECTS. One-year master’s degree (magisterexamen), on the other hand, is awarded to students who complete two semesters of study with 60 ECTS.

Academic Calendar

Universities and colleges in Sweden follow the semester system, typical to most other countries. An academic year is divided into two semesters or terms - Autumn and Spring. The Autumn semester runs from the end of August through the middle of January, while the Spring semester is spread from mid-January to the beginning of June. Admissions Requirements

Applicants should possess a three-year’s bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or must have completed a course of study leading to a degree or diploma equivalent to 180 ECTS.
Official transcripts of the institution last attended should be provided, stating the course taken, subjects studied, and grades awarded, certified by the issuing authority.
Diploma supplements do not work as proof of your degree. However, diploma supplement supported by degree certificate is acceptable.
For English language programs, you should provide evidence of proficiency in English through any internationally recognized test, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or the equivalent.
In case you are taking up a course in Swedish, you must demonstrate your skills in Swedish equivalent to the upper-secondary level, by taking the TISUS test and submitting the score card.
All documents should be submitted in the original language. In case the documents are drafted in any language other than a Scandinavian language, English, French, or German, a translated copy should also be provided in Swedish, English, French, or German.

Application Procedure

If you are not a citizen of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, you will have to pay an application fee of SEK 900, either through a credit or bank card, or by transferring the amount to University Studies in Sweden.
All copies of your original documents should be certified as true copies of the original before submission. This can be done by getting the copies stamped and signed by the issuing institution or a notary public. In case you submit documents that are not certified, your application will not be processed.

Make sure that your documents reach the concerned address before the deadlines; hence, send your application packet well in advance. The tuition fees and costs are decided by each individual university or college. Studying for a master’s degree in Sweden can cost you anywhere between SEK 80,000 per academic year for courses in humanities, commerce, law, and social science, and SEK 1, 80,000 per academic year for programs in fields of medicine and fine arts.
