Degree Structure

Two types of degree options are available under the undergraduate level of study - University Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree. Every undergraduate degree course in Sweden is measured in credits using the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, or ECTS. Each credit is equivalent to about 25-30 hours of study. A university diploma (högskoleexamen) stretches over two years of comprehensive study and is deemed completed when the students build up 120 ECTS, while a bachelor’s degree (kandidatexamen) is awarded on completion of three years, or 180 ECTS. Students under undergraduate programs are taught core subjects in the chosen discipline, apart from general schooling topics. A bachelor’s degree gives access to students to take up master’s studies or secure a reputed position in a leading organization.
 
Academic Calendar
Universities and colleges in Sweden follow the semester system, typical to most other countries. An academic year is divided into two semesters or terms - Autumn and Spring. The Autumn semester runs from the end of August through the middle of January, while the Spring semester is spread from mid-January to the beginning of June. Subject courses are also offered in the summer months of June to August. Short breaks are given during Christmas and Easter.

Admissions Requirements
 
  • Applicants should have completed their secondary education from an accredited school or college.
  • Certified copies of the transcripts of the subjects studied, certificates issued, and grades awarded should be supplied to show evidence of the applicant meeting the eligibility criteria.
  • They are required to demonstrate proficiency in English language by taking the internationally recognized test, TOEFL, IELTS, or the equivalent.
  • In case the official credentials are issued in any language other than English, German, French, Spanish, or one of the Nordic languages, the documents should be translated into Swedish or English.
  • A copy of the page in the passport showing the personal data and photograph of the applicant.
  • Applicants belonging to any EU/EEA country or Switzerland have to get their passport certified in order to get exempted from the application and tuition fees. Certification of the passport is not required for applicants not coming from EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
 
Application Procedure
 
  • Applications for undergraduate courses are made through a central nationalized application service called www.studera.nu, where students can apply for several programs at different universities, with just one application.
  • Each program has been assigned a program code which should be filled in the online application form. These programs codes are available at www.studera.nu or in the program description on the university’s homepage.
  • Create a user account on the website and complete the application form, following the instructions.
  • An application fee of SEK 900 must be made. Candidates can make the payment electronically through a credit or bank card, or can transfer the amount from their respective bank accounts to the “University Studies in Sweden” and take the reference number.
  • All documents required by the admission department must be sent to the “University Studies in Sweden” via the regular postal service or through a delivery service. Mail the documentations to University Studies in Sweden, FE 1, SE-833 83, Stroemsund, Sweden, before the deadline.
  • You can keep a track of the progress of your application by visiting the website and logging on your account.
 
Cost of Education
 
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees and costs are decided by each individual university or college. Studying in Sweden can cost you anywhere between SEK 80,000 per academic year for courses in humanities, commerce, law, and social science, and SEK 1,80,000 per academic year for programs in fields of medicine and fine arts. Apart from the tuition fees, students who have enrolled themselves in student unions have to pay a membership fee, ranging from SEK 50 to SEK 350 per semester, depending upon the union.
