  • You should be at least 18 years of age and not above 30 years, to apply for internship program in Japan.
  • You should have basic command over the Japanese language to improve your chances of being selected for the internship, though it is not compulsory as English is used as a language of communication throughout Japan.
  • You should possess strong educational records as the selection process for internships is highly competitive. Hence, if you provide transcripts with outstanding grades, you have higher chances for a positive response.
  • If you belong to a country that has a Working Holiday Visa Arrangement with Japan, you have increased your odds of being selected highly. In fact, the application process gets quick and easy.
  • Though most internship programs are open to all nationals, there are certain programs which can be applied only by students of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Check whether your country is eligible for a particular internship program before applying to it.
  • Since most internship programs are unpaid in Japan, you will have to provide proof of financing your stay for the entire duration of the internship.
 
Program Fees
Taking up an internship program in Japan provides you with one of the most exciting experiences of gaining practical knowledge of working in one of the biggest trading and financial centers in the world. However, to acquire this extensive and unique experience, you are required to pay an internship fee ranging from Yen 387,250 to Yen 464,700, depending upon the organization and duration of the program. This fee usually includes sharing accommodation, arrival orientation, 24-hour emergency support, and counseling and support during office hours.
 
Application Procedure
 
  • Internship programs are available round the year in Japan but require the applicants to begin the procedure well in advance.
  • Browse through the internet to find all the companies and organizations offering different internship positions at their workplace. Match their requirements with your eligibility.
  • Apply only to those positions in which your qualifications match with their requirements. Shortlist such positions and begin applying to them. The more positions and companies you apply to, the higher are your chances of getting recruited in your choice of organization.
  • Visit the company’s website and fill the application form for internship. You will have to submit a passport size photograph, resume, letter of motivation, and a copy of your passport, along with the application form.
  • In case the company charges a processing fee for your internship application, make the payment as instructed by the company and attach the payment slip, with the application form.
  • It will take about eight to twelve weeks for the company to process your application and respond to it. Based on the documents submitted by you, you may receive one or a choice between two or more internships located in different cities across Japan.
  • On giving your acceptance to a particular internship option, the company will send you an internship offer, following which you may even have to appear for an interview, which is generally conducted online through video conferencing or on the telephone.
  • After you have cleared the interview, you will have to pay a certain amount of the program fees as security deposit and secure your position with the respective company.
  • Thereafter, you will receive a confirmation of your internship placement which will include details of the position offered, responsibilities assigned, stipend to be paid, and other amenities (if provided).
  • Applying for a visa comes as the next step. If you belong to a nation that has Reciprocal Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan and your internship lasts for less than 90 days, you can fly off to Japan without a visa. Your host company will issue you an “Introduction Card to Japan” which will act as your visa.
  • But if your internship duration is for more than 90 days, you have to apply for a Working Holiday visa. Submit your visa application with the Japanese embassy in your country at least a month before your departure to Japan. The process will take about 3 weeks to issue you the visa.
  • Purchase your flight and travel insurance for the entire duration of the internship.
  • Prepare for your departure and book your tickets to Japan.
  • Fly to Japan few days prior to the commencement of your internship program to get a brief review about the city life and to arrange for your accommodation, in case it is not provided by the host company.
