Surf the Schools
Browse through the internet and download a list of universities offering your choice of courses in the US. Surf each college on the internet and inquire about its reputation. Make a shortlist of the colleges that suit your needs, interests, and abilities. Ask for more information from these colleges and universities, through emails. You can even fill up the online application forms and submit it to the university. Though you can download and print the form, complete it and mail it back to the university, you should prefer online application, since it is the quickest way of submitting your application. Do this at least a year before you plan to enter the United States, usually between June and August.
 
Register for Admissions
Register for all the required admission tests necessary for seeking admission in a program in the US. For a bachelor’s program or undergraduate study, you will need to qualify tests, such as TOEFL, SAT, ACT, while for a masters or doctoral program, TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT would be required. Suppose you are enrolling for a fall semester, beginning in September, you should take the relevant tests no later than January in the same year. SAT I and SAT II tests cannot be taken on the same day and the deadlines for registration for these tests are at least four to five weeks before the test date. Mail the tests scores to the universities before the application deadline date. Besides, allow at least four to six weeks gap between the test date and the application deadline.
 
Do Research
Planning ahead in advance will help you make successful application to your choice of colleges and courses. Consider certain questions and indulge in extensive research on them. What are the reasons for you studying in the United States? Which universities will meet your needs? Do you need financial assistance? Check out the application and financial aid deadlines. In case there are any standardized tests required by the university, start registering for them. Start narrowing down your list of schools to about 10 to 20 institutions only.
 
Documents Required
You will need the following documents during the process of admission to any university in the US.
  • Mark sheets and certificates, class X onwards
  • Personal Statement/Statement of Purpose/Personal Essay: This is a description of your past studies, interests, extra curricular activities, future goals, and intended area of study and career. This has to be presented to the university in which you want an admission.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (LOR):
    • One should be from a professor/teacher who has seen you studying and can advocate for your academic skills that are required to pursue higher studies in the US.
    • Second should be a professional letter of recommendation explaining the skills you have/ have developed after gaining considerable amount of work experience. This is mainly for students aspiring for graduate studies.
  • Certificates of extra-curricular activities
  • CV/Work experience certificates

  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination): GRE score is required for all non-management masters/graduate courses.
  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test): GMAT score is required for pursuing management programs, such as MBA.
 
Complete Formalities
After you have applied to the universities and submitted your documents, it is time for receiving letters of acceptance or rejection. This will be around April-June period. Decide the university you wish to attend and notify the admissions office of your decision. In case they desire any form to be fulfilled, complete and return to them. To the universities you have declined, send letters of regret. Complete all your applications duly before the deadlines mentioned in the application forms. Thereafter, make necessary arrangements for financing your course; transfer funds to a US bank and make sure that you have enough money in hand for travel and expenses on your arrival in US. You may be required to deposit one semester or a full year’s tuition fee for reserving your seat, before a certain date. Arrange for housing and medical insurance, in accordance with your university. Get a passport issued, if you do not have one yet. Contact your nearest US embassy or consulate and apply for a US student visa. Make travel arrangements and contact the International Student office of your school for details of your arrival. Also, confirm about the schedule of any orientation held in honor of new students, held by the school.
