Tuition Fees
Until 2005, German universities did not charge any tuition fees from both local and international students. Only after the judgment passed by the Federal Constitutional Court in 2006, did Germany started charging tuition and registration fees at universities and colleges. However, there are some federal states which still do not charge tuition fees. Universities and colleges in federal states, such as Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saarland, charge about 500 Euros per semester. However, students exceeding the standard period of study have to pay an additional fee of 500 Euros per term, until they complete the program. Federal states, like Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, and Thuringia, levy about 50 Euros per semester to cover administration. It is advised that you contact the respective institution to confirm the tuition and registration fees, as this amount can vary from university to university.
 
Living & Other Expenses in Euros
Cost of living in Germany comprises of accommodation, food, books and study materials, leisure, utility bills, transport, clothing, and telephone expenses. The overall cost of residing amounts to about EUR 12,000 per year, depending upon the location you live in and your lifestyle. As such, living in eastern Germany can prove to be a cheaper deal for students who have planned their stay carefully and tactically.
 
Accommodation Expenses in Euros
Living in Germany constitutes major of your wages. Depending upon your lifestyle and the locality, you may end up splurging out anywhere between 100 and 600 Euros per month on just accommodation. Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, and Munich are the most expensive, with rents as high as 350-600 Euros per month, while Dresden, Jena, Chemnitz, Erfurt, and Ilmenau offer the cheapest accommodation rates at about 186 Euros a month. For a more affordable deal, rooms in student hall of residence range from 75 to 225 Euros a month, depending upon the region you are residing in, while a sharing accommodation in the same hall of residence may even be offered at below 75 Euros.
 
Health Insurance in Euros
It is mandatory for all students to get themselves insured up till the 14th full study semester or up to a maximum of 30 years. This means students are required to have statutory health insurance up till this period and hence, pay the amount of health insurance to the concerned company before they register at any institution. However, students above the age of 30 years must be insured with a private health insurance company, as medical fees and hospital expenses are expensive in Germany. Health insurance costs about 370 euros per semester.
