University Admission in UK

In United Kingdom, the educational opportunities present themselves in plenty. The standard of education and the overall facilities surrounding it are of the very best quality, and this is why aspirants from all over the world, including Indians prefer to go to UK to pursue further education in different fields. Off late, the trend has changed and a lot of students are now showing interest in enrolling themselves in the undergraduate courses from UK’s universities, a trend that earlier used to be mostly for post graduate studies. The universities in UK provide with a wide array of interesting and popular subjects to choose from, which makes the attraction towards moving to UK for further studies all the more evident and understandable. If you too are an aspirant looking to prolong your educational years by studying in UK, go through the following lines and equip yourself with all the necessary knowledge you’re going to need.

Admissions Requirements For Undergraduate Courses
  • As the British students go through 13 years of pre-university academics as compared to 12 years of Indian students; the Indian students need to either perform exceptionally well in senior secondary examinations or undergo a foundation course of 1 year to make themselves eligible for university admission in UK. The same applies for other non-UK students. For students who have 13 years of education, they need not undertake this course.
  • If the students don’t wish to study for an additional year to get entry into the universities in UK, they can choose to appear in the Advanced Level examination, which is held twice a year and the syllabus, of which can be obtained from the nearest British Council. Excellent written and spoken English is required to score well in this exam.
  • Those applicants who’re eligible for university admission in UK can apply through Universities and College Admission Service (UCAS), which is a charitable organization responsible for managing applications for full time undergraduate courses for almost all UK’s universities and colleges, with an exception being The Open University.
  • By filling up a single form, either online or through obtaining a hard copy of the application from the British Council, a candidate can apply for up to 5 different courses from among the list and submit the same by 30th of June, for the following academic session. For some courses, the applications need to be submitted by as early as middle of October of the preceding year.
  • All international students, including Indians seeking admission into UK’s universities have to take an English proficiency test called International English Language Test (IELTS) conducted by the British Council and obtain a score of 6 to 6.5. Some universities also accept the scores of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • All universities require complete transcripts/mark sheets/related documents of the previous academic records to be submitted at the time with the application forms along with the letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose.
  • The statement of purpose should clearly mention why the student has chosen the particular stream and how he/she will manage financially during the stay in UK. The letter of recommendation, preferably from the person who has taught the student should highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the student and why he/she would excel in the field.

Admissions Requirements For Post Graduate Courses
Students who are seeking admissions for post graduate courses need to have a graduate degree of 3 years duration in any stream equivalent to the UK’s bachelor degree. Alternatively, students who have successfully completed the undergraduate course in UK itself can also apply for the post graduate admissions.
For admission in few post graduate courses, four year degrees like B.E. or B.Tech may be required as these are considered equivalent to UK’s bachelor’s honors degrees. Successful completion of several Indian master’s degrees like M.A. and M.Sc. are also accepted for post graduate admissions in UK.

Admission forms can be obtained from the respective university’s website, filling them and either submitting them online or through posts. The form need to be supplemented by the complete details of the students’ previous academic records from the respective universities or institution. All the details, attested by the registrar, have to be provided.

If the student has completed the undergraduate course from a non-UK country, then he/she will have to take the IELTS English proficiency exam conducted by the British Council or the TOEFL exam. If convinced that the student’s medium has been English throughout, some universities may waive these tests.

All international students who want to enroll themselves in a post graduate management course have to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and score well in it. Without a good GMAT score (700 or more for top universities), admission in management based courses in UK won’t be allowed. Scores of Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are not accepted by UK universities.

All universities require complete transcripts/mark sheets/related documents of the previous academic records to be submitted at the time with the application forms along with the letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose.

Visa Requirements for University Admissions in UK
Apart from the above mentioned admission procedure, fulfilling the visa requirements is absolutely mandatory. International students need to submit their visa applications through the IM2A forms available from the British embassy free of cost. This form needs to be duly filled and submitted to the embassy, along with the visa fees. A letter of acceptance from the university or college in which the student has been selected to study and an evidence in favor of the student that he/she can support himself/herself financially during the stay in UK are compulsory documents that needs to be given to the embassy. Also, if the student has been chosen as per UK government’s sponsorship, an applicable bank statement needs to be presented to the embassy. Last but not the least, all students need to clear an interview before they can be granted a visa to study in UK.
