  • Higher education in France is divided into two major categories: Public universities and grandes ecoles.
  • Grandes ecoles focus on providing education in only one subject in which students can specialize. These specialized schools enroll hundreds of students each year including many international students. In these schools, students have to complete rigorous education curriculums, which include several hours of study and regular oral examinations with professors.
  • Public universities offer wide variety of courses to a greater population. Studies at public universities can generally last for up to 4 years. Short-term courses provided by universities usually go on for 2 years and prepare students for a specialist field.
 
Degree Structure
Universities in France admit students with a high-school diploma or equivalent. Traditionally, bachelor degree in France is divided into various cycles. First cycle leads to a bachelor's degree (after three years of advanced studies), whereas a second cycle takes first cycle of studies to an advanced diploma (after one year) and also leads to one of two postgraduate diplomas (the DEA or DESS, which are awarded two years after the bachelor's degree). After the introduction of Bologna process in 2004, bachelor's degree is generally given over three years of study, a master's over five years and a doctorate over eight.
 
Academic Calendar
The academic year in France runs from mid-September till the end of June next year. However, some institutions in France may also enroll students for spring, summer or winter semesters as well. Applications should be made two months in advance for the desired courses.

Admissions Requirements
  • Students who want to study undergraduate degrees at universities of France need to have a French baccalaureat or equivalent degree and must have passed the university entrance exam in their respective home countries.
  • To take admission in grandes ecoles, students are required to have baccalaureat or equivalent diploma. Generally, students are ranked on the basis of results obtained from competitive entrance examinations.
  • Students interested in undergraduate courses in France need to submit an official transcript from institutions that they have attended after secondary school with full details of the subjects and other details like correspondence courses, diplomas etc.
  • For international students, it is necessary to submit their IELTS/ TOEFL scores as a proof of their English proficiency.
  • You need to submit complete application form duly filled with all sections.

Application Procedure
 
  • For admission in the universities of France, either you can directly download the application forms for universities from their respective websites or request application forms from the universities. You can also get application forms for the universities from the French embassy in your respective countries.
  • Complete the application form with all relevant documentation. Send the complete application form and all supporting documentation to the Enrolment Office of the respective institution before the closing date of application process.
  • For enrollment in grande ecoles, you have to appear for a competitive exam, Concours which is held in France. To appear for exam you can apply and obtain a special three-month competitive exam visa (visa concours). You will be provided with a residence permit to take the course only after you have cleared the exam.
 
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for the graduate courses vary from institution to institution and also between courses. At university level, you may have to pay tuition fees of € 110 to € 750 per annum for a course, whereas tuition fees can be approximately € 490 for a course in public engineering schools. Private institutions (engineering and business schools) generally charge much higher educational fees that can be easily between € 3600- € 14,300 for a course.
