University of Salamanca, one of the earliest universities in Europe, is situated in Spain and was established in 1134. However, it received the title of university only in 1218. Like University of Salamanca, there are several other prestigious and famous universities in Spain. The country has a total of 73 universities, out of which 23 are private institutions. Universitat de Barcelona
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona or UAB Barcelona was founded in 1968. It is one of the largest universities in Spain with student strength of 50, 000. Even though it is a state-funded university, it runs most of its affairs on autonomous manner. This university provides 183 masters degrees and 88 doctoral programmes. There are more than 2000 foreign students studying at various campuses of Universitat de Barcelona.
 
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
The Autonoma Universidad Madrid or Autonomous University of Madrid was established in 1968. It provides various courses to approximately 36,000 students. The university is organized into seven faculties, which include Philosophy and Arts, Psychology, Law, Science, Business and Economics, Education, and Biology. Apart from these departments, it has administrative services; a sports center; the Institute of Educational Sciences, Music and Languages; and a primary school. UAM is widely recognized for its quality of education with excellent research.
 
University Complutense Madrid
The Complutense University of Madrid is one of the oldest universities of Spain and is located in Madrid. The university has its foundation laid when King Sancho IV of Castile created the Studium General on May 20, 1293. In 1499, it received the status of university. It is also the largest university in Spain having student strength of more than 98, 000 with nearly 9, 500 staff members. The university campus is spread over a large area of over 36,000 acres including the university gardens. UCM is divided into two separate campuses, one in Moncloa (Central Madrid) and the other in Somosaguas (South Madrid).
 
Universitat de Valencia
The University of Valencia was founded in 1499 and is situated in the Spanish city of Valencia. This leading institution of Spain is one of the oldest surviving universities of the country. The University of Valencia provides more than 60 official degrees, 100 PhD courses and over 250 postgraduate courses. The wide range of disciplines offered by university includes humanities, engineering, social sciences, health sciences, legal and teaching sciences. University of Granada
The University of Granada was established in 1531. This public university enrolls approximately 80,000 students and also has its campuses in Ceuta and Melilla. The university has nearly 5,000 international students, including both Erasmus program exchange students from the European Union. This university offers 51 degree courses, 24 diploma courses, 141 doctorate programmes and a wide range of disciplines such as biology, biochemistry, food science and technology, environmental sciences, statistical sciences and techniques pharmacy, physics, geology, mathematics, medicine and dentistry.
 
University of Salamanca
This university was founded in 1134 and was given university status by King Alfonso IX in 1218. It is the oldest university in Spain and the third oldest surviving university in Europe. There are nearly 28,000 students enrolled in the college, along with 2,240 doctoral students. The university is engaged in important ties with foreign universities, other institutions, public and private enterprises and companies. The university is widely recognized for unifying European and American cultures. Universidad de Sevilla
Universidad de Sevilla or University of Seville was founded in 1505. It is one of the top ranked universities of Spain with student strength of over 50,000. The present aim of the university is to continue with the innovations developed in the scientific and technological fields. University of Seville offers large number of degrees to its students. Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Universitat Pompeu Fabra or Pompeu Fabra University was established in 1990. It is one of the best ranked university of Spain and Europe. The university provides 19 undergraduate degrees, 37 official masters and 9 PhD programs as well as around 60 UPF masters. There are seven faculties in the university including humanities, health and life sciences, economics, political and social sciences, communication, law, translation and interpretation. The university also has a polytechnic school and four university research institutes.
 
Universidad de Santiago de Compostela
This university was established in 1495 and is situated in city of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. There is a second campus located in Lugo, Galicia. There are over 42, 000 students studying in the vast campus of the university. The teaching staff has over 2, 000 teachers and there are other 1, 000 people working in administration and services. The university is involved with the European mobility project that allows university foreign students to study in Santiago de Compostela, in return for their own students studying in foreign institutions.
 
University of Murcia                                 

The University of Murcia has its origin dated back to thirteenth century but the current University of Murcia was founded in 1915. The university has a student body of over 38,000 students including around 1500 post graduate students. Administrative staff of the university is around 800. The University of Murcia has two campuses, one in La Merced, which is also the original campus in the center of the city and the other campus is located in Espinardo, 5 km to the north, where most of the students reside. The faculties of the university include fine arts, biology, industrial sciences, law, education, philosophy, medicine and chemistry.
