TOEFL General Tips

The following are the tips which will be helpful for TOEFL test takers:

GENERAL TIPS:

• Make Yourself Acquainted with all the Formats of TOEFL

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the formats of TOEFL test, which are Paper Based Test (PBT), Computer Based Test (CBT) and Internet Based Test (iBT). Now most of the countries offer only iBT, but still it is necessary to know the differences between each format.

• Research the Requirements of TOEFL Scores in Different Universities

Before preparing for test, do an ample amount of research on different universities which you wish to apply and know their score requirements for TOEFL and then make required preparations according to it. The average score required for PBT is 550, for CBT it is 215 and for iBT it is 70.

• Learn and Practice Academic English

This test doesn’t need any special knowledge in any subjects apart from English. It rates only your skills in English language. It is very vital to know the language which is used as the mode of communication in the campus. Hence reading different journals, textbooks and encyclopedias will be very helpful.

• Make Use of More Practice Tests

Buy as many books as possible which have more practice tests and concentrate more on sections in which you are not very confident. There are many free samples of practice tests available online also.

• Find an Adviser

A person whose native language is English will be able to help you more in advising regarding grammar and will encourage you to practice more. If you cannot afford an adviser, take suggestions from people who have taken TOEFL before also.

• Be Alert about the Time Limit

It is necessary that you pace yourself to manage time better on the test day so that you do not spend too much of time on one exercise only.

• Attend all Questions

Do not leave any question blank. Think logically when you are not sure of the answer and answer all questions. As you will not be allowed to go back to the previous questions it is important that you answer each question.

• The Corrections Made Should be Legible

When you are taking paper based test and you want to correct any of your answers, use a dark pencil and erase the wrong answers properly. As the machine corrects your paper more care has to be taken that the right answers are legible and wrong answers are completely erased.

TIPS FOR THE FOUR TOEFL SECTIONS:

• Reading Section

You will not have time to read full passage so read the questions first and then browse through the passage for answers. Usually the questions appear in order according to the passage. So give importance to the minute details in questions which will hint the answers in passage.

• Writing Section

Using lots of relevant examples in essay writing is very important and organize the essay which should have the all the required information and still it should be simple and should have more clarity in it.

• Listening Section

For this section train yourself to listen and understand the tape or given conversation at one go as on test day. Donot allow yourself to listen to the tape again during the preparation time. If you are confident about answering then don’t look back again at the question.

• Speaking Section

Practice for the right technical terms to be used for this section and learn new words every day. Being fluent is very crucial while talking so practice fluency more.
